Augmentation Mammoplasty

Augmentation mammoplasty is plastic surgery to enlarge the size of the breasts. Augmentation mammoplasty is currently the most common plastic surgery procedure performed in the United States after liposuction. Doctors make incisions to perform an augmentation mammoplasty at either at the areola (the darker skin around the nipple), the underarm or under the breasts. Surgeons then place the breast implants either over or under the pectoralis muscle. Patients most often choose silicone breast implants for an augmentation mammoplasty because they mimic the consistency of natural breast tissue. Saline breast implants are popular with patients who are concerned with having a foreign substance in their body or want to avoid the possibility of silicone leaks in their breasts long after augmentation mammoplasty. Doctors consider the ideal breast size of the patient, breast implant material (silicone vs. saline), breast implant location (under vs. over the muscle) and the approach for insertion at length. Excellent rapport with an experienced board certified plastic surgeon is extremely important for the patient. A certified plastic surgeon works with a patient to make decisions and assures the best augmentation mammoplasty outcomes.

Comorbid Drug Abuse and Mental Illness

When two disorders or illnesses occur simultaneously in the same person, they are comorbid. Surveys show that drug abuse and other mental illnesses are often comorbid. Six out of ten people with a substance abuse disorder may also suffer from another form of mental illness. The high prevalence of comorbidities does not mean that one condition causes the other, even if one appears first. Drug abuse can cause a mental illness. Mental illness can lead to drug abuse. Common risk factors cause drug abuse and mental disorders.

Hormonal Acne Treatments

In females, hormonal treatments can improve acne. The common combined oestrogen and progestogen methods of hormonal contraception have some effect, but the antiandrogen, Cyproterone, in combination with an oestrogen (Diane-35) is particularly effective at reducing androgenic hormone levels. Diane-35 is not available in the USA, but a newer oral contraceptive containing the progestin drospirenone is now available with fewer side effects than Diane-35 or Dianette. Diane-35 is effective where blood tests show abnormally high levels of androgens. Along with this, treatment with low dose spironolactone can have anti-androgenetic properties, especially in patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome.
